And it has been for decades.
Democracy in the United States has been in the death throes. It is now on life support. I have been educating myself on this dynamic since the:
orchestrated persecution of Professor Anita Hill in 1991, in part, supported by Joe Biden who was the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee;
appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court that same year;
results of the 2000 election when I first understood in my bones that the US Supreme Court could be bought;
2003 presidential claim of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq that rationalized a war historically and widely viewed as a foreign policy and humanitarian disaster.
2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission further tilted political influence toward wealthy donors and corporations. The court’s controversial decision reversed century-old campaign finance restrictions and enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited funds on elections.
2024 Supreme Court ruling which declared that a President is immune from prosecution when exercising the “core powers” of the presidency.
And during the last year and a half, the so-called Democratic party suppression other candidates by keeping them off ballots and mainstream media outlets.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC), which is not a government entity but a private company, has systematically rigged the primary system for presidential elections in 2016, 2020 and now 2024.
I don’t vote for that.
