“You Are the Sum of the Five People You Spend the Most Time with.”

Updated: Mar 15, 2019

People Holding Letters That Spell Success

  • Motivational guru Jim Rohn’s observation is a game changer.

  • The key variable in Rohn’s equation is exposure to clean energy: Thoughts. Attitude. People. What you read, watch on screens, who you talk to and hang with.

  • Steep yourself in positivity to stay grounded and focused on what matters when advancing projects and progressing toward goals.

  • Do this and you will exponentially enhance the quality of your life.

Here's How:

Bid Naysayers Farewell

  • To those acquaintances who roam earth draped in sarcasm, ridicule and complaints, give a wide berth.

  • On those rare occasions when you share space, stay at the surface of polite conversation to minimize exposure of your soft core to glass-half-empty remarks.

  • Do not to take naysaying personally. It’s a projection of the naysayers’ worldview.

  • Still, fallout from negative energy is not benign. Don’t let other people douse your creative fire. As much as possible, eliminate psychic drag and steer clear.

Spend Time with People Who Get It

  • Some people are dream killers while others are dream catchers.

  • If you don’t have five positive people in your life in general, and who support your goals in particular, then find them in books, magazines and on video.

  • One of the five people I regularly hang with is prolific author Isaac Asimov who wrote more than 500 books on varied topics in his 72 years of life. I keep a collection of his quotes, which I read daily. Here’s a sample:

If my doctor told me I had only six months to live, I wouldn’t brood. I’d type a little faster.

Above all things, never think that you’re not good enough yourself. A man should never think that. My belief is that in life people will take you at your own reckoning.

It has been my philosophy of life that difficulties vanish when faced boldly.

Don’t agonize. It slows you down.

In addition to Asimov, I am attracted to the bold-thinking, can-do entrepreneurs, organizations and thought leaders profiled in Fortune Magazine. After reading a few issues at my local library, I decided I wanted this energy to come directly to my mailbox.

My annual subscription connects me with people who live life with a risk-taking mindset and who’ve invested heavily in their imagination and talents.

It is in books, poems, paintings which often give us the confidence to take seriously feelings in ourselves that we might otherwise never have thought to acknowledge. Alain de Botton
